Tybius Flowers: A Boxing Warrior from Philly Has Been Murdered

Mar 3, 2004  Media Report
The bare facts are Tybius Flowers was murdered while sitting in his car, which was parked outside the home of an aunt he had just visited. This happened in the early hours of Tuesday morning in the North Philadelphia streets known as "the Badlands."

A true Philly Fighter has fallen.

Tybius Flowers may not have been a world champion from the City of Brotherly Love like Bernard Hopkins, Joe Frazier, Matthew Saad Muhammad, Tim Witherspoon or a long list of others.

He never won an Olympic Gold Medal like Meldrick Taylor, Tyrell Biggs, David Reid and others.

His name might never have gone big time, but for those that truly know what makes a Philly Fighter, Tybius Flowers was the real thing, a genuine Philly Fighter.

He had all the heart, the fire, the determination, the street toughness that would never see him back down. He embodied the essence of Philly boxing, an honor he lived every day in Philly gyms, especially in his home away from home at Shuler’s Gym in West Philly, sparring with the likes of Reid, Hopkins, Taylor, Kassim Ouma, Clinton Woods, Will Guthrie, Rock Allen, Dennis Holbaek and others.

Flowers was the heart and soul of the gym, with something to say about everything, whether sparring a world champ or teaching a college kid from Drexel University how to hold his hands up. Irrespective of their talents or background, they were all pleased to suffer the rasp of his tongue. His wit lit the electricity in the gym.

All this came to a tragic, unnecessary, wasteful and abrupt end as Tybius’s life was extinguished in a hail of bullets as he sat defenseless in his car.

It’s been reported that the shooting may have been related to a murder that Flowers had witnessed and was talking with the district attorney’s office about. He died as he lived, fighting for what he believed was right.
Flowers, who was 32, had a 17-6 record and was to co-headline a card promoted by his long-time trainer and surrogate father Percy Custus on April 9th at the Drexel National Card Armory in Philly. The show will now be dedicated to the memory of Flowers.

Tybius’s life touched everyone he met, particularly his gym mates -Yusef Mack, Najaii Turpin, Tim Witherspoon Sr. and Jr., Frank Walker, Chris Joynt, Donnie McGriff, Gerald Nobles and others, many of whom will be featured on the April card.

The funeral service will be held on Monday, March 8th at 10 a.m., at the Shalom Baptist Church in North Philadelphia. A memorial gathering will be held immediately after church services at the Shuler Gym, 750 North Brooklyn Street in West Philadelphia.
Flowers is survived by three children.
