Viva Canelo! HBO confirms support to Saul Alvarez in Quest to dethrone Floyd Mayweather from Mexican Dates

Saul Canelo Alvarez
-VIVA CANELO! Alvarez wants to reclaim Mexican Fight dates -
Hispanic boxing fans are the best. They are vocal, they are supportive and they turn out in droves for their Mexican fighting heroes. Absolutely nothing wrong with that, and let's face it, boxing is so much better off because of them. So wouldn't it be great for a Mexican fighter to take back the Cinco De Mayo and September Mexican holiday dates from the non-Mexican, Floyd Mayweather? (No disrespect to Mayweather - he understands the value of Mexican fans - but these dates should be reserved for Mexicans and not exploited as Cinco De Mayweather.) One fighter who could and should dethrone Mayweather from these dates is... Saul "Canelo" Alvarez. Boxing could move in the fast lane with a guy like Canelo taking the helm.

In a recent interview conducted by Chris Mannix (CNN SI) with HBO Sports President, Ken Hershman, the topic turned to Canelo going head to head against Mayweather to take back the Mexican fight dates.

When asked if HBO would support Canelo Alvarez's determination to take back those May and September Mexican holiday dates, even if it means going up against Floyd Mayweather? Hershman answered the question, stating: "It’s going to be his call. We’re here to support Canelo. We did a long term deal with him and we believe he is going to be one of the biggest stars for the foreseeable future. We’re right there with him. We’re not looking for a fight with anyone, and I don’t want this to devolve into that. He’s an HBO fighter and we are going to do whatever we can to help him reach his goals."

Sounds like Canelo made the right move with HBO. The Cable powerhouse knows his value and are more than willing to help Canelo reach his goals. I for one would love to see Canelo fighting on Mexican dates... it's a brilliant move. It reminds me of when Canelo's promoter (Golden Boy Promotions), Oscar De La Hoya use to own those dates. Boxing strived well in those Golden years. If anyone can match (or perhaps even exceed) De La Hoya... I suggest Canelo is the man to do it.

Viva Canelo!

The full interview with HBO's top dog, Hershman, hits on many other topics in the hot world of boxing right now. For Mannix's part... superb job with amazingly good questions through out the whole interview.
