Manny Pacquiao or Floyd Mayweather Jr? The real P4P King of Boxing is... (Answer may Surprise You!)
By Johnny Benz (March 17, 2010) Doghouse Boxing
With Manny Pacquiao's most recent victory over Joshua Clottey, one might ask if his performance hurt his number one pound for pound ranking? Most top pound for pound lists, at least all the ones I have come across have for months now ranked Pacquiao at number one atop of the pound for pound list with Floyd Mayweather Jr. coming in second place.
Personally for me, I think the top spot should be held by both Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather Jr. Neither
boxer has really shown they deserve to be ranked over the other. There is nothing out there on either guys record that proves to me that point blank they are number one.
Look, I do admit I like what I see from both fighters in the ring, and should these two face off tomorrow, I think the fight would go 12 full rounds with "Money" Mayweather Jr. winning the fight on the scorecards... but I am certainly not counting "Pacman" Pacquiao out (that would be foolish). I just strongly believe that "Money" Mayweather Jr. is a more technical fighter who will utilize his skills to out perform Pacquiao. So am I saying that I believe "Money" Mayweather is pound for pound better? No, I am still saying that both fighters have yet to prove to any of us who deserves the Pound for Pound title.
Right now, in my opinion both "Money" Mayweather and "Pacman" Pacquiao are tied for the top spot. Neither one of them deserves to be ranked number 2... and neither one of them deserve the hold the top spot over the other.
My final Opinions...So there is only one way to really give the top spot to only one of these guys... they need to face one another. "Money" Mayweather Jr. will first need to get past "Sugar" Shane Mosley (ranked number 3 on most pound for pound lists) when they fight on May 1st, and Pacquiao will need to stop fighting Top Rank in house fighters and put his ass on the global market (C'mon already, Bob Arum!) There is really only one way for either fighter to be ranked number one... and that is to prove it inside the ring against one another.
Neither fighter deserves an easy pass to being the Pound for Pound King.
