|Did Ricky Hatton Die or Something?!
The Hard Punch by Johnny Benz, Doghouse Boxing (Sept 15, 2008) DoghouseBoxing.com
Ricky Hatton is set to take on Paulie Malignaggi this coming November 22nd. As the date approaches, in my opinion Hatton has done little to nothing to help the promotion of the fight. This past Saturday in Las Vegas at the MGM Grand, a press conference was held to help hype the bout. Malignaggi showed up, but Hatton was a no show.
The excuse given was Hatton got sick. Food poisoning was thought to be the reason, and Lou DiBella
confirmed that Hatton was at a bar the night beforehand. Apparently Ricky was drinking lemonade (the cause of his illness), and not his typical Guinness. Me, I don't buy that. What the hell is Hatton doing in a Bar before a fight, Period?! Everyone knows how much Hatton loves to drink the booze. I find it very hard to swallow that Hatton could not make it to the Press Conference because he was sick from drinking lemonade (non-alcoholic). Of course this is just my opinion.... but I don't think Hatton missed the conference over a glass or two of lemonade.
So here we have it, plenty of press shows up, including our very own John Novoselac from Doghouse Boxing. Malignaggi shows up, the Promoters, Lou DiBella and Oscar De La Hoya show up... but no Hatton.
I could handle Hatton missing a press conference, Boxers foolishly do it all the time. I just can't handle the fact that barely any promotion of the fight has come from Hatton's mouth. I've seen Malignaggi talking up a storm all over the place. If anyone has me buying a ticket to the fight, it's Malignaggi, certainly not "Missing in Action" Hatton.
I've read countless quotes from Malignaggi, but I can't recall a word from Hatton on the fight. I am sure Hatton has said a lot in regards to the fight, but I am not seeing it, I am not reading it.... hell I am not feeling it.
The only thing I've read recently on Hatton was a tiff he and his girlfriend were having over published photos of Hatton all over some cute Blonde girl while away on a men's only vacation.
Final Thoughts and Opinions:
It's time for Hatton to get off vacation and start helping with the promotion of the fight. It's unfair to leave Malignaggi holding the mic alone.
For me, part of the fun of any big fight is the promotion leading up to the event. Often you can tell if there is going to be fireworks in a fight due to the explosiveness of the media events leading up to the fight. It also helps the sport, gives it the attention it so richly deserves.
Come on Hatton... Stop sucking on Lemons and promote this Damn fight already! If I didn't know any better I'd think Hatton was dead... since the only life I am seeing is coming from Malignaggi.
