How Floyd Mayweather Jr can Lose even in Victory to Manny Pacquiao By Johnny Benz (Nov 27, 2009) Doghouse Boxing
I've been a harsh critic as well as a solid admirer of Floyd Mayweather Jr. for sometime now. There have been times in his career where I have been quick to give him proper praise and then there have been times where I dished my feelings on his poor choices. Choices such as finding reasons not to fight Antonio Margarito or Miguel Cotto a few years back. I've felt there to be times where Mayweather Jr. was running away from a decent challenge. This time however it would seem that Mayweather Jr. is not running away from, but in the direction of Manny Pacquiao.
There is another type of running that I have criticized Mayweather Jr. for and that is running inside the ring. He certainly knows how to make himself a moving target and one that is next to impossible to hit... but often times it makes for a super boring fight.
If Mayweather Jr. chooses to play hit and run with Pacquiao, and wins using those tactics, chances are he will lose. Here is what I mean by that. Say for instance Mayweather Jr. defeats Pacquiao over 12 rounds and the judges hand him the fight... if Mayweather Jr. wins by throwing punches and then running away from Pacquiao's attack, the Fans will not appreciate that kind of victory.
The only way Mayweather Jr. can win this fight and have the respect of Fans is if he goes toe to toe with Pacquiao. Sure, we all know Mayweather Jr. can throw punches and then run like hell out of the way of incoming punches... but can he stand in front of a Lion and Lambada dance with the beast without being torn to shreds?
The only way to win the fight against Pacquiao is to do it in a way that wins over the Fans. Hit and run tactics which work well for Mayweather Jr., but make for a boring fight will not do against Pacquiao. Fans are really expecting both fighters to shine... and if one boxer is chasing the other around the ring... then fans will be very vocal of just how dull, boring and a waste of time that was. When Mayweather Jr. hears all the complaining about his "running man" performance, he will only have himself to blame. After all, what Fan will be happy to pay to see Mayweather Jr. perform his rendition of the Boston Marathon against Pacquiao on fight night?
Final Thoughts: If Floyd Mayweather Jr really wants to defeat Manny Pacquiao and shine doing it... then he cannot run around the ring against Pacquiao. If Fans see Pacquiao chasing Mayweather Jr. all night long... then a victory fighting from the back seat will not bold well for Mayweather Jr. Fans will not be inspired by such a performance nor will they give Mayweather Jr. much credit for such a victory. The only way Mayweather Jr. can win this fight and earn praise is if he does it toe to toe with Pacquiao. Besides, running from Pacquiao is not a guaranteed way to win for Mayweather Jr... but it is a guaranteed way to piss off the Fans who expect more from a mega-fight.
So who do I think would win if they end up fighting one another and go toe to toe? Well that is a question for another time in another article.
