Martin Concepcion bumped into promoter Clifton Mitchell while he was celebrating his 31st birthday and agreed to box on his show at Hermitage Leisure Centre in Whitwick on Friday, October 5. The rematch between Kreshnik Qato and Matt Hainy for the English middleweight title tops a bill that also includes red-hot prospects Arfan Iqbal, Louis Norman and Jahmaine Smyle.
Local ticket-sellers Marc Ketnor and ‘Prince’ Dave Davis also meet in a hotly-anticipated rematch.
Concepcion feared his exciting career may be over after undergoing knee surgery to correct the injury that ruled him out of his challenge for Nick Blackwell’s English middleweight title in March.
But the Leicester left hooker has been back at the gym on Navigation Street with trainer Jez Brogan and says he wants to win either British or Commonwealth honours before he hangs up his gloves.
Concepcion, beaten in challenges for both belts and a Midlands champion at two weights, admits he “can’t wait\” to get back in the ring.
“For a while, I wasn’t sure if I could carry on boxing,” he admitted, “and have been down the pub a bit more than usual.
“I didn’t know what to do with myself because boxing has always been there. It was horrible.
“But I’ve got a bit more direction now.”
Tickets for the show are available from 01332-367453.
