More than 1,500 fans were at the Peterborough Arena in March for the city’s first pro boxing show for four years and promoter Robert Waterman returns to the venue again on September 29.

Waterman has confirmed fans’ favourite Cello Renda will top the bill and the Peterborough favourite could be fighting for a title in front of his home-town crowd.

Renda is known by internet fight fans for his dramatic up-and-down scraps with Paul Samuels and Waterman had hoped to match them for a third time on the show.

Samuels is injured, but they could meet again in November.

Super-middleweight Caine Brodie and Jake Dyer, both popular winners on the March show, will also box and Waterman hopes the city’s latest professional will make his paid debut in front of his home fans after Sam Barron has announced his intention to follow in his father’s footsteps.

Gary Barron was a popular scrapper who took on all comers throughout his 25-fight professional career and will train Sam at his gym on Lincoln Road.

British Boxing Board of Control officials are currently dealing with Barron’s paperwork and if it is sorted out in time, the 23 year-old will make his professional debut at the Exec Arena.

Barron, a former semi finalist in the NABC championship, had his last amateur bout in June and looks to be an explosive talent.

Gary said: “I sparred world champions like Lloyd Honeyghan and Chris Pyatt when I was a pro – and Sam hits harder than both of them.

“He can really hit and I should know. We have a spar sometimes and he batters me !

“Sam definitely keeps me on my toes and it’s a shame he’s too big to put over my knee these days !

“Seriously, I didn’t do it properly when I was a professional boxer, but I know about nutrition now and Robert(Waterman) will get Sam the right fights.

“Sam has been thinking about turning professional for a while and seems to really have the bit between his teeth now.

“He’s got the ability and determination and it’s a great advantage to be boxing at home.”

Waterman hopes Jordan Gill, the former amateur star from Chatteris, will have his second professional fight on the bill and unbeatens Nathan Dale and Terry Holmes are also pencilled in to box.
