Francie Stokes claimed his second win in 24-hours to guarantee Ireland at least a second bronze medal at the 10th European Schoolboy Championships in Anapa, Russia today. The Derry teenager (Oak Leaf BC) registered an impressive 11-7 win over Rahim Pashayev of Azerbaijan to join Mayo’s Nevan Fannon in the last-four.

Both boxers will meet Russian opponents in the semi-finals on Friday.

Overall, Ireland recorded six wins out of nine today, with John Sweeney, James McGivern, Kieran Molloy, Bret McGinty and Michael Nevin also progressing.

Sweeney, Molloy and McGinty recorded a hat-trick of wins over Israeli opponents, while McGivern and Nevin advanced at the expense of Azerbaijan and Germany.

Sean Purcell, Brian Kennedy and Matthew Davis lost out this afternoon despite brave efforts.

Nine Irish boxers will be in action in the quarter-finals tomorrow

The semi-finals and finals at the 22-nation tournament will be held on Friday and Saturday.
