Michael Maguire has been backed to end more than 20 years of hurt for Peterborough fighters.
Not since Gary DeRoux lost the British featherweight title in 1991 have city fight fans seen one of their own win a major championship.
Manager Robert Waterman reckons Maguire can end the wait after watching the 24 year-old from Eastfield race to a two-round stoppage of Krzysztof Rogowski at Bushfield Leisure Centre.
The win propelled Maguire into the top 10 of the British bantamweight rankings on website www.BoxRec.com and he afterwards signed a three-year management deal with Waterman.
Waterman has promoted Maguire's last three fights in Peterborough and says his latest performance was his best yet.
He's set to match Maguire on his dinner show in London on Wednesday, February 26 - and has another show pencilled in for Bushfield Leisure Centre in April when the former world-class amateur could box for a professional title.
Waterman said: "Michael is one of the most naturally gifted boxers I have ever seen. He has an array of punches very few boxers have.
"Rogowski is no journeyman. He has a few fights recently, but he's taken rounds off good fighters.
"Michael just took him apart in two rounds. Rogowski didn't know where the punches were coming from.
"Considering his inactivity, he didn't show any sign of ring rust.
"It was a world-class performance from Michael and he was cock-a-hoop with himself afterwards.
"I can't see any reason why, after his next fight, he can't fight for a major title, hopefully in Peterborough.
"If we can get a sponsor, I see no reason why Michael can't fight for the British or Commonwealth titles in front of his home crowd."
Bristol's heavy-handed Leigh Haskins is the current British champion and with Martin Ward likely to vacate the Commonwealth belt to concentrate on a crack at world honours, that could create an opening for Maguire.
Waterman added: "Michael needs a fight over the longer distance and then we will have to see what titles are out there.
"Haskins is a very, very good fighter, but after another two or three fights Michael will be ready for him."
