By or provided from SecondsOut.com on Doghouse Boxing. Jerry Glick reporting from ringside: Joe Smith Jr’s trainer and resident cheer leader, Gerry
Capobianco, wasn’t surprised at the ferocity of his man’s arrack
Saturday night in the main event of the first ever professional boxing
card at Resorts World Casino in Queens, NY. Promoted by the
triumvirate; New Legend, Old World, and W.O.N.,it was an historic event,
with nine exciting fights that kept the 1500 fans hopping.
There was no time to feel out the other guy with Smith, from Shirley,
NY, rushing out of his corner throwing bombs to any part of Rashid’s
anatomy that he could find available. Rashid, from Brooklyn, NY,
crashed to the canvas in the second from right uppercut. He got up in
distress and managed to survive the frame only to run into that buzz saw
again in the fateful third. Another uppercut and Rashid was down. Up
and looking to his corner, he was pummeled to the canvas again for the
third and final knockdown in the round.
After Smith’s big win Capobianco boasted, “He looked great. I
think anybody who tries to pressure him, who tries to hit him, needs to
be careful because he hits like a mule.” Smith came out firing both
weapons without letup. He appeared to be more aggressive than usual.
“That’s just the way he is. He had been trading punches in the gym with
rugged Jason Escalara so he was working very hard after a long break
between fights.”
In the co-feature, unbeaten Frank Galarza, 7-0-1 (4 KOs), fought to
an eight round draw with another undefeated fighter, Alantez Fox, 7-0-1
(3 KOs), so the vacant NYS Junior-Middleweight Championship remains that
way, vacant. As tall as Galarza is, Fox, 152 pounds, was bigger. It
was Galarza pressing forward and the long armed Fox jabbing and punching
from outside. This reporter saw it 5-3 in rounds for Galarza, 153
pounds, but the Judges were split, 77-75 for each man and 76-76, even.
Benji Estevez refereed.
Galarza, from Brooklyn, NY, stayed on top of his lanky foe and kept
him on the run. The good news about Fox, from Forestville, MD, is that
he fought tall. He rarely gave up his height and a rematch between
these two warriors is in order.
“He took advantage of my mistakes,” said a still happy Galarza who
suffered a swollen right cheek (“It’s not broken”). He came on strong
down the stretch and claimed that it was part of his camp’s strategy.
“We trained to go hard for eight rounds so I tried to pick it up towards
the end.”
THE UNDERCARD
After a slightly shaky start when he absorbed a hard right to the
head in the opening round, Juan Dominguez, 123 ½, Brooklyn, NY, 11-0 (7
KOs), out fought and out punched Jesus Bayron, 125, Mayaquez, PR, 5-6 (4
KOs).
A left hook to the body dumped Bayron to the canvas in the third and
another caused him to bend almost to the floor so referee Steve Willis
called it a knockdown. All three Judges agreed 59-52 for Dominguez.
In an upset, Jhovany Collado, 124 ½, Queens, NY, 4-6-2 (1 KO),
appeared to have formerly undefeated Rafael Vazquez’ number. Vazquez,
124 ½, Brooklyn, NY, 8-1 (6 KOs), bounded into the ring like a man who
knew he had already won. The over confidence cost him the fight. A
right by Collado dropped him in round one. Up and a little wobbly he
made it out of the round.
For the rest of the fight Vazquez boxed and got back into the fight
but he was still getting hit and the Judges were split, 58-56 for each
fighter and 58-55 for Collado from the third judge. Claudio refereed.
Elton Dharry, 116, Brooklyn, NY, 9-5-1 (4 KOs), gets more impressive
with every fight. Hard to believe that he started off with a losing
record after watching him walk down and cut up Gabriel Cruz, 115, Jersey
City, NJ, 4-5-1 (1 KO), who was stopped on his stool after the second
round. Benji Estevez refereed.
A right hook from lefty Boyd Melson, 154 ½, Brooklyn, NY, 9-1 (3
KOs), dropped Yolexcy Leiva, 153, Nashville, TN, 5-5 (4 KOs), in the
first frame and went on to out fight him the rest of the way with the
exception of the end of round two when a right by Leiva rocked the
former Marine. Willis refereed.
Micah Branch, 125, Cincinnati, OH, 1-2 (0 KOs), picked up his first
pro win over a very eager Allan Phelan, 125, Ireland, 0-2. They traded
punches for four rounds with Branch landing more often. The judges all
saw it 39-38 for Branch. Estavez refereed.
Angel Garcia, 133, Brooklyn, NY, 3-1 (0 KOs), dropped stocky Pedro
Andres, 130, Bridgeton, NJ, 0-2 with a jab in the third stanza and
completely out pointed him to take home a unanimous decision by scores
of 40-33 and 39-36 twice. Eddie Claudio refereed.
Daniel Gonzalez, 146, Queens, NY, 1-0 (1 KO), hammered Anthony Smith,
147 ½, Brooklyn, NY, 0-1, to the body stopping him at 1:01 of round
two.
***PUNCHLINES***
The place was packed with boxing celebs including John Duddy, Mike
Ruiz, Harold Lederman, Tommy Gallagher, Derric Rossy, Junior Jones, Tito
Bracero, Sadam ali, Jonathan Cuba, Floriano Pagliara, plus many more.
The once beaten Smith, 173 ½ pounds, gave no ground to opponent Yasin
Abdur-Rashid, 174 ¼ pounds. He battered Brooklyn’s Rashid to the
canvas four times before referee Eddie Claudio called it off at 1:57 of
round three. Smith upped his record to 11-1 (11 KOs), and Rashid saw
his numbers fall to 7-3 (2 KOs).
