European champion Jamie McDonnell moved closer towards a dream world
title shot with an eighth round retirement win over Darwin Zamora in
Sheffield on Saturday.
The win means McDonnell can now move forward towards a crack at the IBF bantamweight title.
McDonnell made a positive start by flicking out the left jab to score
points against late replacement. Zamora stood his ground but McDonnell
was always a step ahead.
"I know I’m the best in the world at bantamweight, I’ve just got to
go out there and prove it," McDonnell told Sky Sports afterwards.
"He hurt me with a little body shot but apart from that I thought I
was beating him up, I was thinking ’come on ref, stop it’ but he came
back and hit me with one to keep me on my toes.
"I’ve won every title going, next step world. I’ve defended my titles
and fought the best and I’m proving I’m going to be the best in the
world.
On the undercard bantamweight prospect Kal Yafai scored a second round stoppage win over Scott Gladwin.
