By Tom Gray. Welshman Gavin Rees will take on England’s John Murray in a
thunderous lightweight collision at the Olympia in London on December
8th.
Rees is a former British, European and World Champion and, should he
emerge victorious, will likely meet the winner of the WBA lightweight
title fight between Richard Abril and Sharif Bogere (scheduled for
November 24
th in California).
John Murray is also a former British and European Champion who lost
his unbeaten record to Kevin Mitchell last July in a classic pitch
battle. Despite the loss Murray, a true warrior, immediately accepted a
world title bout with the sensational Brandon Rios but was stopped in
the eleventh round at New York’s Madison Square Garden.
With neither man in the habit of taking a backward step, Rees and
Murray should ignite a belated bonfire on December 8th. Both have an
equal amount of fights, and knockouts, on their ledger with Rees 31-1-1
(18KO’s) and Murray 31-2 (18KO’s).
The “Christmas Cracker” show, promoted by Matchroom, will also
feature the highly anticipated duel between Lee Purdy and Carson Jones
as well as the return of former European Middleweight Champion, Darren
Barker.
