Boxing results - report. Billy Joe Saunders added the British middleweight title to his
Commonwealth crown at the ExCel Centre in London on Saturday when he won
a hard fought 12 round decision over Nick Blackwell.
The scores were 117-112 116-113 115-114 on the judges cards but the scores did not reflect just how close the fight was.
Blackwell put Saunders under pressure at the end of the third round,
delivering a right hook to the head of Saunders and came under more
pressure from the economical but effective Blackwell in the fourth.
Blackwell pushed forward in the 12
th and final round as
both exchanged some heavy punches. The round was a thriller and one
could argue Blackwell shaded it but Saunders hung to nick the verdict of
a very entertaining fight between two evenly match boxers.
On the undercard Liam Smith claimed the vacant Commonwealth
light-middleweight title with a unanimous 12 round points win over
Londoner Steve O’Meara.
The 24-year-old from Liverpool decked O’Meara in the first round and
managed to stay ahead during the entire fight. The scores were 116-112
twice and 118-110.
