Chris Algieri and Joshua Clottey Win on LI (Full Boxing report from Ringside)

Jerry Glick reporting from ringside: Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone gave both Star Boxing promoter Joe DeGuardia, and Huntington Junior welterweight rising star Chris Algieri awards for their work in bringing business to Long Island and their fine work for the community.

Star Boxing came back to the Paramount in Huntington, NY and put on another Rockin Fights show (number 10) which included a feed from the Las Vegas show headlined by Mayweather-Alvarez.

After the four live fights, screens were dropped and everyone watched the big show from Las Vegas including the final few rounds (the Algieri-Acuna fight ran over) of the IBF Junior-Middleweight championship fight between defending champ Ishe Smith and new champion Carlos Medina, followed by the Junior-Welterweight title fight between Champion Danny Garcia and challenger Lucas Matthysse won by Garcia; and finally the much anticipated Floyd Mayweather-Saul Alvarez Junior-Middleweight title fight (yes, Floyd dominated).

Chris Algieri, 142,.had too much fire power and threw too many punches for journeyman Wilfredo Acuna, 140. After four give and take rounds, Algieri turned up the heat and let his hands go.

Algieri hurt his opponent in the fifth frame and went for the KO tossing everything he had for the last minute of the round. He continued the attack in the sixth round and In round seven a huge welt developed under Acuna’s right eye. After the round ended the doctor visited Acuna’s corner and determined that he could not continue and stopped him on his stool. Algieri improved to 18-0 (8 KOs) while Acuna fell to 13-13 (10 KOs), Tony Chiarantano refereed.

Come backing Joshua Clottey 156, dominated Dashon Johnson, 155, using his superior skills in his first fight since 2011. He fought an uninspired fight, but used his jab to start his combinations as he backed Johnson, from Esconddido, CA, and now 14-13-3 (5KOs), to the ropes. His tactics kept Johnson’s hands tied up. At times referee Mercante admonished a frustrated Johnson for using rough tactics finally deducting a point in round five for again pushing Clottey to the canvas. The Judges gave it to the former IBF Welterweight champ by scores of 100-89 twice and 99-90.

Although he was inactive since 2011, Clottey claimed that he stayed in the gym while he worked out managerial difficulties.

THE UNDERCARD

Smallish heavyweight Constantin Bejenaru, 216, Catskill, NY, 4-1-1 (3 KOs), came out of his corner throwing combinations to the head of the much larger Excell Holmes, 236, Buffalo, NY, 2-2-1 (1 KO). The left handed Bejenaru hurt Holmes with a straight left to the head in the second frame of four, and after that he upped his punch output trying for the knockout. Holmes had the look of a man wishing he was doing anything else and doing it anywhere else. Bejenaru didn’t get the KO and settled for a lopsided decision from all three judges, 40-35, and 40-36 twice. Chiarantano refereed.

Wendy Toussaint, 151, Huntington, LI, 2-0 (0 KOs), is not a boy named Sue, but he is a boy named Wendy, and he remained unbeaten with the use of counter rights to the head of debutant Koree Boyd, 149. Wyandanch, NY, 0-1. Boyd was the aggressor, but not only did he not land the effective punches, at the end of every flurry he threw he absorbed a hard right to the head. Troussaint stayed out of range landing accurate rights that almost never missed their target. The Judges tallied 39-37 twice and 40-36 all for Toussaint. Arthur Mercante refereed.
