With a single punch, Antonio Tarver did what critics and haters alike could never do, he humanized Roy Jones Jr. Sure, critics and haters have always had the literary power of the pen with which to express their thoughts and opinions, but to convince a boxing fan you have always needed more than the verbal prowess of a Shakespearian dialect. You needed the truth, and the truth in boxing has always been best represented by the punch. On the night of May 15, 2004, Antonio Tarver’s counter left hand represented the truth and with one fell swoop, he cracked Roy’s veil of invincibility and punctuated the end of Roy’s reign. To acknowledge this coronation, the truth deserves a pseudo ode; the king is dead, long live the king.

Mike Tyson on Credibility
By Martin Wade (June 8, 2004)
Hey boxing fans, Mike Tyson is in the gym and he’s even planning on taking a bout this summer. As of this writing Iron Mike is hard at work under Freddy Roach in preparation for a “semi scheduled” July return against Kevin McBride. As a boxing observer who continues to root for Iron Mike to retain what is left of his considerable ring gifts, I must say that I am happy he is back. Mike appears to be more relaxed and personable nowadays, a regular at the fights and eager to lend his opinions on the evenings fight and the state of the heavyweight division...

Calzaghe: Unrealized Potential
By Jim Cawkwell (June 8, 2004)
The recent postponement of the IBF light heavyweight championship fight between champion Glencoffe Johnson and challenger Joe Calzaghe was greeted with surprise and disappointment by many. Not me though, I have come to expect such occurrences. My cynicism regarding Calzaghe is merited, and I intend to show you the reasons

The Golden Twilight?
By Jim Cawkwell (June 7, 2004)
Phase one of the collision course to history was completed rather shakily, but the final part of the proceedings may well be one that Oscar De La Hoya would rather sit out. For it could be said that De La Hoya’s main event produced one of the more sickening instances of poetic justice boxing has seen in recent times. Approximately nine months ago, Oscar received the wrong end of a decision in Las Vegas which prompted him to propel himself head-first into the fight to clean up this dirty business. On Saturday night it was he who stood across from disappointment; ironically, the establishment had just enlightened him on the unpredictable matter of changing fortunes.

Does Oscar Stand A Chance?
By Aaron Imholte (June 7, 2004) Photo © J.P. Yim
It was a tale of two fighters Saturday night. Bernard Hopkins performed at his usual "super-champion" level as he defeated Robert Allen decisively en route to a unanimous decision. Oscar De La Hoya on the other hand had more than his hands full with WBO middleweight champion Felix Sturm. Oscar walked away with the decision, but he knew he would before the fight had even started. The only way Sturm could derail the mega-showdown in September, is by doing nothing short of knocking De La Hoya out cold.

Castillo outworks Lazcano for WBC lightweight title
By Anthony Cocks (June 7, 2004) Photo © HoganPhotos.com
On Saturday night at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada, former WBC lightweight champion Jose Luis Castillo recaptured the vacant title with a dominant performance against game co-challenger Juan 'The Hispanic Causing Panic' Lazcano in the main support bout to the Bernard Hopkins/Oscar De La Hoya doubleheader

Verno Phillips Claims IBF Title
by TKO 6
By George J. Elsasser (June 7, 2004)
It was to be Verno Phillips vs. Kassim Ouma for the vacant IBF jr. middle bauble but fate stepped in and took Ouma out of the picture via training injury - enter #15 ranked Carlos Bojorquez to fill the void.

If It Glitters... It Might Be Gold
By George J. Elsasser (June 7, 2004)
Some past special ones got there on merit, the can't miss label came the ol' fashioned way, they earned it by performance inside the squared circle - unlike some today that are handed "prospect" recognition before having a pro fight.
Elsasser: Felix Sturm Steals the Show
The Club Fighters
By George J. Elsasser (June 7, 2004)
Was the war years of the 1940s, and the new miracle invention of the magic lantern still hadn't as yet found its way into our Brooklyn cold-water flats, and the small fight clubs still remained alive and well.

The championship baubles were frozen what with many of the names and top contenders having volunteered or been conscripted into service, and still today I recall many of those that packed the neighborhood arenas only walking distance from our second floor "mansion" at the corner of Wilson Ave. and Moffat St. in good ol’ Bushwick-Ridgewood, (Brooklyn), USA.

Felix Sturm Steals the Show
By Elisa Harrison (June 6, 2004)
Collision Course may have been the catchy title given to the June 5th boxing show by some overpaid publicist, and in many ways the name held true to life. The collision was intended to imply that if Bernard Hopkins could get past Robert Allen and Oscar de la Hoya could get past Felix Sturm the two would collide later on this year. The publicist who christened the card had no way of knowing that the real collision would take place between Adnan Catic a.k.a. Felix Sturm and Oscar de la Hoya, and if you ask me Oscar de la Hoya got the worst of the impact.

Oscar de la Hoya vs Felix Sturm: Not Tonight...
By Jeff Mayweather (June 6, 2004) Photo © HoganPhotos.com
On Saturday night June 5th at the M.G.M. in Las Vegas there was supposed to be a Collision Course between Oscar de la Hoya and Bernard Hopkins, although in separate bouts. Hopkins vs Allen was so boring I fell asleep, waking up in the final round, just in time for Michael Buffer to announce that Hopkins had once again prevailed over Allen.
