With Vitali Klitschko vs. Juan Carlos Gomez W.B.C heavyweight title fight cocked and loaded for ESPN this Saturday at 5 PM ET, I decided to take a look at look at Dr. Ironfist Vitali. The towering 6’7” Klitschko, 36-2, 35 KO’s, will be making the first defense of his title against classy top-10 contender Juan Carlos Gomez, 44-1, 35 KO’s. Vitali is coming off a 9th round KO demolition over top contender Sam Peter upon returning from a 4-year ring hiatus. The southpaw Gomez most recently out pointed European brawler Vladimir Virches. The boxing betting odds for the Vitali
Klitschko vs. Juan Carlos Gomez fight has Klitschko as a 6-1 to 7-1 favorite.

Although not as popular as his younger brother Wlad in the US, Vitali is probably the better boxer. A medical Dr. outside the ropes, Klitschko shows equally impressive cognitive ability on the canvas. Vitali makes full use of his vast wingspan by using a relaxed style similar to more flat-footed Muhammad Ali. Armed with a set of fast hands for a heavyweight, Klitschko launches accurate jabs and long left hooks from the waistline. The whipping lefts a merely a set-up for a laser straight right hand that leaves most opponents twitching lifeless on the floor. The boxing betting odds OVER\UNDER for the Vitali Klitschko vs. Juan Carlos Gomez fight is at 7.5 rounds.

Vitali’s defensive abilities are equally impressive. An expert at distance, Klitschko uses smart ring movement along with skilled slips, parries and blocks. Vitali also has the ability to bite down on his mouthpiece and slug toe-to-toe with skill when necessary. Vitali takes a helluva a punch but his paper thin skin is his Achilles heel. Another problem for the aging giant has been durability. Vitali has suffered a number of physical injuries in recent years that have restricted him from training to his full capabilities. The boxing betting odds for the Vitali Klitschko vs. Juan Carlos Gomez has Klitschko at -700 to -1000 on the moneyline.
