Although he looked like a shell of his former greatness in his last fight against Joe Calzaghe, Roy Jones Jr. will be back in action this Saturday night against former contender Omar Sheika. The Roy Jones Jr. vs. Omar Sheika fight will be televised on Pay-Per-View due to the star appeal that Jones, 52-5, 38 KO’s, still commands. Sheika, 27-8, 18 KO’s, is a live opponent but the bout is mainly being made to showcase Jones in front of his hometown crowd in Pensacola, FL. The boxing betting odds for the Roy Jones Jr. vs. Omar Sheika fight have Jones Jr. as a 6:1 favorite.

Roy Jones Jr. at age-40 is still a primo athletic specimen capable of unloading lightning quick punches. Roy’s chronic hand problems have made him more selective with his punches but he can still crack. Searing straight-rights and blitzing left hooks are still in Roy’s arsenal. On a cognitive level, Jones Jr. has all but lost his reflexes, legs, jab and self-confidence. Devastating KO losses to Glen Johnson and Antonio Tarver have made Roy a very cautious fighter that goes out of his way to protect his chin at all costs. Lacking a solid boxing foundation to stand on, Jones Jr.’s confidence in his reflexes to slip punches has waned. Roy now primarily relies on blocks to cover up instead of his legs or head movement. The boxing betting odds for the Roy Jones Jr. vs. Omar Sheika fight have Jones Jr. as a -700 favorite on the moneyline.

Omar Sheika should be able to give Roy a good test. Jones has a suspect set of whiskers and Sheika can punch with both hands. Sheika is an aggressive fighter with a big heart and a good chin. Sheika is a dangerous fighter early in bouts but his stamina issues, brittle hands and tender skin cause him to fade in the later rounds. I expect Sheika to have his moments early against Jones but eventually Sheika will be cut to ribbons thanks to his weak defense. Look for a Jones TKO stoppage around the 10th round. The boxing betting odds OVER\UNDER for the .Roy Jones Jr. vs. Omar Sheika fight is at 10.5 Rounds.
