While the critics have voiced their opinions of Chad Dawson after his close decision win over Antonio Tarver Saturday night the fact is that Dawson got the W and is still a champion. After his 12-round decision win I decided to break down the 26-year old fighter’s abilities inside the squared circle. Chad Dawson cashed in as a -750 boxing betting favorite in the Chad Dawson vs. Antonio Tarver rematch.
Tall, stylish and left-handed, the 6’3” Dawson is a boxer with loads of ability. After an excellent amateur career, “Bad Chad” has made a nice transition to the pro’s using a slick Floyd Mayweatheresque style. Well-Built and very fast, Chad is a physical specimen in his prime. While not a huge banger, Dawson is a crisp puncher that throws melting body shots. Dawson has an explosive nature to his offense unloading blistering combinations that can overwhelm defensively sub-par opponents. On the defensive side of incoming leather Chad is very instinctive with his ability to slip, counter and make use of shoulder rolls. Dawson has shown a flaw on defense by eating flush shots from time to time when he gets lazy with his hand placement and can be caught off-balance with his footwork.
One of the questions surrounding Chad has been his chin but after absorbing some heavy lefts from Tarver it appears that his punch resistance is sound. Some have questioned Chad’s focus at times with a failed marijuana test a few years back and his off-performance against Tarver that some feel was due to him looking ahead to bigger bouts. Having an influx of cash can also deter a younger fighter and Dawson must be careful not to fall victim to the pitfalls of fame and fortune. Dawson still has some developing to do to become a top pound-4-pound fighter (stamina and hand placement issues) but still has a nice upside. Without many big paydays at Light-Heavyweight Dawson most likely will seek a bout with U.K Super-Middleweight champion Carl Froch. After his performance Saturday night I would make the boxing betting odds on a Dawson vs. Froch bout at Dawson -150.
