Oscar De La Hoya vs Felix Trinidad Jr. Fight Still Possible?

With the talks of Oscar De la Hoya vs Felix Trinidad Jr. fight still up in the air I decided to take a closer look at the Puerto Rican icon Trinidad. Trinidad gave a good account of himself with Roy Jones Jr. at the highest weight of his fighting career at 170 Lbs. after a two year layoff. Felix has felt the same way as Manny Pacquiao in his negotiations with De La Hoya by refusing to take 30% of a 70/30 purse split in a proposed Oscar De La Hoya vs Felix Trinidad Jr. fight. The fight makes sense for Trinidad to get one last big payday but only time will tell if he will bend to the Golden Boy’s demands.

Felix “Tito” Trinidad has already cemented himself as a living boxing legend, but Tito still wants to prove himself after losing to Jones Jr. And Winky Wright in his last two fights. Trindiad was unable to drop Roy Jones at 170 Lbs. but his punch is still to be feared at anything below 160.

The 35-year-old Trinidad, 42-2, 35 KO’s, has not fought since he was outpointed by Roy Jones Jr. In January. Felix has been rumored to walk around at 200+ Lbs. In between fights. At 5’11” Trinidad has a big frame and he still has some life in his 35-year old legs.

Felix’s trademarks are his two-fisted power, bodypunching, sound technique and heart. One of Trinidad’s bad tendencies is telegraphing his left hook by flexing his left leg in an effort to generate leverage. Trinidad also has only a slightly-above average chin and doesn’t have much of a plan B if things are not going his way.

I believe that both De La Hoya and Trinidad have declined at the same rate and that the boxing betting odds should be about even. I give a slight edge to Oscar based on Trinidad’s inactivity but I see this basically as a pick’em fight. This fight makes sense for De La Hoya as Trinidad is not as tough as Antonio Margarito and Felix will also do better numbers at the box office.
