W.B.C light-heavyweight champion Chad Dawson will get a chance to silence critics about his disputed decision win over Glen Johnson when he rematches the Jamaican tonight at 9:45 PM ET on HBO. I believe that the 40-year old Johnson should have been given the nod when the two first met in April of 08” and was stunned to see that Dawson 28-0, 17 KO’s, has been instilled as a -450 boxing betting favorite. I decided to break down the 27-year old southpaw to evaluate if the high price tag against Johnson, 49-12-2, 33 KO’s, is warranted. The Chad Dawson vs. Glen Johnson line has Dawson as a 4-1 boxing betting favorite.
Tall, stylish and left-handed, the 6’1” Dawson is a boxer with loads of ability. After an excellent amateur career, “Bad Chad” has made a nice transition to the pro’s using a slick Floyd Mayweather Jr. esque style. Well-built and very fast, Chad is a physical specimen in his prime. While not a huge banger, Dawson is a crisp puncher that throws melting body shots. Dawson has an explosive nature to his offense unloading blistering combinations that can overwhelm defensively sub-par opponents. On the defensive side of incoming leather Chad is very instinctive with his ability to slip, counter and make use of shoulder rolls. The Chad Dawson vs. Glen Johnson betting line gives Dawson a 71% chance of winning.
One of the questions surrounding Chad has been his chin been answered in recent fights that his punch resistance is decent. Some have questioned Chad’s focus at times with a failed marijuana test a few years back and his off-performance against Antonio Tarver that some feel was due to him looking ahead to bigger bouts. Having an influx of cash can also deter a younger fighter and Dawson must be careful not to fall victim to the pitfalls of fame and fortune. Dawson still has some developing to do to become a top pound-4-pound fighter (stamina and hand placement issues) but still has a nice upside.
