Nasser Al-Harbi has been handed the chance to prove he can be the Midlands’ next boxing hero.
Al-Harbi will now meet Marcus Portman at the New Bingley Hall in Birmingham on Friday, May 11 after Young Mutley pulled out of the top-of-the-bill fight on Coldwell Boxing’s show.
Portman has won WBF honours and challenged for the British and Commonwealth light-middleweight belts in his 30-fight career and promises to give 22 year-old Al-Harbi his toughest-ever test over eight rounds.
Portman, from West Bromwich, is a skilled, but temperamental southpaw and a look at his record shows that only top-level fighters such as Bradley Pryce and Jamie Cox have beaten him.
At the age of 31, he will see his clash with Al-Harbi as a chance to climb back into title contention.
Al-Harbi is a fighter on the rise and suffered big-fight disappointment in March when his English light-middleweight title eliminator against Jamie Ball was ruled a technical draw following an accidental clash of heads.
But Dave Coldwell, head of Coldwell Boxing, was encouraged by what he saw from Al Harbi.
He said: “Nasser’s got the talent to be a name in the Midlands and possibly beyond and from what I saw against Jamie Ball, he’s getting stronger as well.
“I thought he would box Jamie from the outside, but the way he took the fight to him shows Nasser is getting stronger and more confident.
“He dealt with the big occasion very well and because of that, I’m looking to step him up in the coming months. He won’t be far away from a major title fight if he beats Portman.”
All-action Peter Vaughan boxes on the undercard, along with local ticket-sellers Craig Cunningham and Callum Cooper and more information is available from www.coldwellboxing.comand twitter @davidcoldwell.
