Team Ivaylo Golovkin: Is Mundine Running Scared From Gennady Golovkin?
By Media Report on Doghouse Boxing (May 5, 2010)
Ivaylo Gotzev, advisor to WBA #2-rated middleweight Gennady Golovkin (18-0, 15 KOs) says now that a purse bid has been held for the right to promote a battle for the vacant WBA Middleweight Title between his man and top-ranked Anthony Mundine (38-3, 23 KOs), he hopes Mundine hasn't lost his nerve and will sign the contract.

With a top bid of $1,210,000, California-based Epic Sports Management, Inc. (ESMI), in association with Bob Arum's Top Rank, Inc., won the purse bid held on May 3 at the Wynn Hotel in Las Vegas.

However, Gotzev says he's now concerned as to whether Mundine, an icon in his home country of Australia, will actually put his name on the dotted line.

"Mundine probably realized the power and skills that Golovkin will bring to the fight," Gotzev theorized. "He's got 48 hours or so to sign the contract and we haven't heard anything yet. The boxing business is about true warriors fighting each other. We've thrown our gloves in the ring to take the fight, now let Anthony Mundine do the same."

Not only have Gotzev and Golovkin issued the challenge to Mundine, they want it so badly they are willing to let the fight take place in Mundine's homeland. "We will fight Mundine on his home turf and win the title in Australia if he decides to show up. We don't care if we fight in his backyard. Let his family be the judges. When Gennady Golovkin hits him with either hand, nothing else will matter. He will knock Mundine out!"

Golovkin, currently trained by Abel Sanchez, had a distinguished amateur career, which included earning a Silver Medal for Kazakhstan in the 2004 Olympics in Athens, Greece, where he defeated Andre Dirrell in the semi-finals. In addition, he posted wins over such luminaries as two-time World Amateur Champion and current Top Rank, Inc. undefeated prospect Matvey Korobov; current Emanuel Steward protégé Andy Lee and current IBF Super Middleweight Champion Lucian Bute.

Golovkin has been fighting professionally for five years almost exclusively in Germany. He has stopped all but three of his 18 opponents and has knockout wins in his last four - including a two-round pummeling of Russian Mikhail Makarov, which boosted him to his current #2 ranking in the WBA.
