Boxing News from the World Boxing Council
By Media Report on Doghouse Boxing (Dec 8, 2008)
In the current month, December 2008, our President, Doctor Jose Sulaiman Chagnon, will be celebrating his 33rd year as the leader of the World Boxing Council, the most important and reputable sanctioning body of the sport of fists that has ever existed.

It was on December 5th, 1975 in Tunisia, capital of the country that has the same name, where the Commissioner from Tamaulipas was unanimously elected within the framework of the thirteenth WBC Convention.

32 delegates from 21 countries participated in the meeting, which was held at Hotel Africa in the previously mentioned city.

The President of the Republic of Tunisia back then, was Mister Habib Bourguiba. The WBC and boxing itself have had, since then, a total change in many aspects, thanks to the tireless work done by our President and elements who have been by his side, many of whom are still performing nowadays, doing it in the best way, always serving the best interests of the sport.

Within these 33 years that have gone by, boxing is a different one, very different from that when the last quarter of the previous century was beginning. Many relevant happenings and events have changed our sport, which has now turned into a less dangerous activity, more productive, regarding great fighters as well as the purses that they are currently earning.

Revolutionary rules as the reduction in the number of rounds in a fight, from 15 to 12, the mandatory weigh-in 24 hours before the bout, the creation of intermediate divisions, the four-rope ring; well, dozens of improvements in the regulations, which we insist, make of boxing in our time, a much safer activity for those who practice it.

Since the very moment when Jose Sulaiman Chagnon was elected President, and up to now, December 2008, the WBC has sanctioned 1429 world championship fights, all divisions included, in the five continents, having had the participation of several great fighters, some of them thought to be among the best ever, fighters such as: Muhammad Ali, Larry Holmes, Mike Tyson, Lennox Lewis, Vitali Klitschko, Sugar Ray Leonard, Roberto Duran, Julio Cesar Chavez, Tommy Hearns, Marvin Hagler, Oscar De la Hoya, Ruben Olivares and many others.

Dozens of political and religious leaders of the highest level, as well as Heads of State of many nations, have welcomed our President and other members of the World Boxing Council, in recognition of the indisputable prestige our organization has achieved.
