It’s the Quietman vs the Fatman this weekend when John Ruiz defends his WBA heavyweight trinket against former middleweight and chronic smack talker James Toney at Madison Square Garden on Saturday night on HBO. Will Ruiz’s one-two-clinch style be able to negate Toney’s skilled in-fighting and slick defence, or will the former three division champion be able to capture a portion of the most coveted prize in sports? Read on to find out who the Doghouse Boxing scribes pick to win and why…

Rob Scott: Toney is tops in the skill level between the two, but Ruiz has a puncher's chance. Usually this puncher's chance shouldn't be taken lightly - and this time is no different. The only problem for Ruiz's puncher's chance is he will be in with one of the best defensive fighters in the game. He will land, but not hard and enough times to get the job done. Toney by decision.

Anthony Cocks: While watching John Ruiz fight is about as much fun as masturbating with a cheese grater, I’m reluctantly tipping him to win this fight by MD. James ‘Mudguts’ Toney will take a few rounds to get going and tire down the stretch, once again allowing Ruiz to steal rounds he has no right to win.

Gary Pino: The John Ruiz-James Toney bout will be so boring, it will be fun to see! I have been right on my last few heavyweight picks so lets see if I can remain on this roll? This is easy! Toney is not just a KO artist but a scientific fighter who is tough to hit. Ruiz is a big lumbering man who is tough, but will be taken to school by the better fighter here. Tony will outclass him, frustrate him and beat him to the punch in every round as far as this goes. Remind anyone of what Jones did to Ruiz? Styles make fights and as in any heavyweight fight, Ruiz could land the big shot and win, but my take is Toney will knockout John Ruiz inside of 5 rounds. Even if this went the distance can anyone see Ruiz winning on points? Toney by KO probably inside of 5 rounds.

Aaron Imholte: Toney will outwork and outbox John Ruiz to a 12 round Unanimous decision.  James' in fighting and superior technical boxing skills will win out over Ruiz' hugging and leaning.

Benny Henderson Jr.: Regardless of what people may say John Ruiz is no pushover, unless you are David Tua. To look at this fight on paper no doubt Toney has the upper hand. Much better boxer, great tactical fighter on the inside, very much experienced. Ruiz, hits, holds, hits, holds, hits, hits, holds, very tiring for his opponent. If he goes to hold Toney I am sure he will taste a fist full of uppercuts so you can pretty much call it at that. But! John seems to find a way to win, judges, referee, promoter whatever he wins. I might probably be the only guy here rooting for John but I am. Not as flashy, not as flamboyant, not as exciting but for some reason I am leaning towards John. John Ruiz wins in 12 (SD). Oh yeah, I think Stoney will be in his corner the entire fight on this one.

Bobby Jones: In Order for Ruiz to avoid becoming the ONLY boxer in history to lose to TWO former middleweight champions he has to fight the way he likes to fight. Clinching a lot, and keeping it sloppy.  Toney is coming off a very serious injury that has causes athletes in other sports to retire prematurely.  Ruiz has a sneaky right hand, but Toney has great defense for a man who stays right in your face the entire night, and Toney has said he will do just that.  So with that I pick Toney by a somewhat wide, perhaps 8-4 Majority Decision.

Peter Chhim: Toney's just too damn skilled and too damn mad to lose to Ruiz.  He knows with all the crap he's been talking lately that he had better back it up, or else he'll be eating the biggest mouthful of crow in history.  Ruiz will keep it close because he's effective in his own way boring way, but there's just too much of a gap in talent for me to pick him.  Sorry Johnny boy, but the pipes are playing.

Andrew Mullinder: Just because Toney is a technically superior boxer with a natural size disadvantage, doesn’t mean that he’ll be able to do what Roy Jones did to Ruiz.  Where Jones floats in and out of range attacking with lightning flurries from unusual angles, Toney sits flat footed in ‘the box’ drawing leads to open gaps for his keenly placed counters.  This will suit Ruiz’ style more, and the early rounds will be very scrappy.  However, Toney is one of the most intelligent boxers alive, and he’ll work Ruiz out by the middle rounds.  Providing his conditioning holds up down the stretch, Toney should win my close unanimous decision.  Toney UD.

Luke Dodemaide: Sure the prospect of having a new charismatic heavyweight champion is appealing and one that the sport's fans have been dreaming of since the beginning of the millennium, but unfortunately I don't like James Toney's chances of getting past the quite man and becoming the first former middleweight champion to win a heavyweight title since Roy Jones beat the same man two years ago. James Toney ain't Roy Jones, James needs to be in close to perform at his crafty best and this is a distance that Ruiz's "jab and grab" simply doesn't allow a fighter to operate in, especially a smaller man in James Toney. I think this style can only be countered by a far superior boxer, ie Roy Jones, or a massive inside hitter, i.e. David Tua. James Toney doesn't possess those qualities and don't expect him to be possessing a world heavyweight championship belt Saturday night either. Prediction: Ruiz in a snorefest.

Sean Newman: This is not an easy call, mainly because like many fans, I question James Toney’s credentials as a heavyweight. We all know that he has beaten an older than dirt Evander Holyfield and some fat guy named Booker. He can run his mouth with the best of them, and has probably promoted himself into this fight. Ruiz is no mystery, his is a reputation of a boring, mauling type who doesn’t win pretty, but wins nevertheless. I do not think he will win here, as his style seems made for Toney’s counterpunching. If Toney can slip away from Ruiz’ attempts at wrestling, he can make this an easy fight. In the end, Toney will have busted Ruiz up for a unanimous decision victory.

Chee: Toney took 1 fight to take Holyfield out... Not 3. If Roy Jones can move up in weight and defeat Ruiz... So should Toney. James Toney W12, or Late Round KO.
