Guerrero on an Accelerated Learning Curve
By Anthony Cocks, Site Editor (June 11, 2004)
Robert 'The Ghost' Guerrero
On June 3 featherweight prospect Robert 'The Ghost' Guerrero proved that there is substance behind the hype when he battered former WBA super bantamweight title holder Enrique Sanchez to an eighth round stoppage on 'ShoBox: The New Generation'.

Many people felt that Sanchez would represent a stern challenge for the 21-year-old prospect, but the lanky southpaw passed the test with flying colors.

"The fight went real good," Guerrero explained to Doghouseboxing.com. "I was happy to get my jab established. I was controlling the whole fight. I think it was a good step up in competition for me. I needed to get that experience."

With his previous 13 bouts lasting an average of just over three rounds, the extra ring time can only benefit the rising star. Although this fight marked only the third time Guerrero had been beyond the sixth round, the Gilroy, California native insists his stamina wasn't a concern going in to the fight.

"No, not at all," he said. "I trained real hard for this fight and did everything I needed to do to get ready for this fight. There was nothing that was going to stop me from winning this fight."

And win he did. After gaining control of the early action with his jab, Guerrero opened up a cut over Sanchez’s left eye in the third round. In the fifth round Guerrero rocked Sanchez with a barrage of punches that started with a left uppercut, and when the referee called a halt to the action in the eighth, Sanchez's face was a mask a blood.

Yet despite his dominant performance, Guerrero is fully aware that he is still learning on the job. And unlike many other up-and-comers, he is happy for the fans and media alike to determine how good he looked against Sanchez.

"First of all I learned that fighting a southpaw is not as easy as it looks," he said. "Me being a southpaw made me realize how much on an advantage it is to be a southpaw. As far as rating, I'll let you guys do that. You guys are the experts.”

Competing in one of the most fiercely contested divisions in boxing doesn't faze Guerrero, who is confident he'll be ready to challenge one of the big names in the very near future.

"I think within the next year I should be ready for a title shot, God willing everything goes as planned,” he said.

In the short term a match-up with fellow unbeaten prospect Ricardo ‘Rocky’ Juarez, who was last seen struggling against Joe Morales on NBC, would provide an entertaining and fan-friendly stoush that would go a long way to determine just who is the future of the 126lb division.

"As far as I know, there hasn't been any talk of me fighting him,” said Guerrero. ”But if it were to go down, I think I would give him more problems than Joe Morales because I'm taller, faster and I fight from the southpaw stance with twice the power.”

"I want to fight the best, Barrera, Morales, Marquez and Pacquiao,” he added. “I guess you can say they are on my hit list.”

At five-foot-ten, Guerrero is one of the bigger featherweights currently campaigning in the division, but he doesn’t see himself jumping up in weight just yet.

"I see myself moving up after I capture a title at the featherweight division,” he said, “once again, God willing everything works out the way I plan it.”

Guerrero is currently enjoying a well-earned break at home with his family while he awaits word on his next assignment from his promoter Dan Goossen and manager Bob Santos. In closing he had a few words for his ever-increasing band of supporters.

"All things are possible through Jesus Christ," he said. "Keep watching my fights and thank you for your support. With all my fans behind me I will go to the top. Thank you and God Bless to all."
