WBA #15 light heavyweight Daniel ‘Porky’ Lovett, 17-3 (10), put together a dominant ten round performance to outpoint former Australian light heavyweight champion Jamie ‘Tough’ Guy, 9-9-1 (7), in Melbourne, Australia on Saturday night.

Fighting in front of a sellout crowd at the plush Peninsula function centre at Docklands, Lovett roughed up Guy early, wobbling him in the early rounds and marking him up around the left eye.

The 25-year-old Lovett, who required an injection in his right foot for tendonitis prior to the bout, got into a dogfight in the middle rounds with both boxers trading bombs at close quarters. A Guy right hand bloodied Lovett’s nose, but the popular Cranbourne boxer showed no ill-effects as he settled back to working off the jab.

In testament to Guy’s toughness, he wore all the punishment that was dished out but kept on firing back. Body shots were the order of the day with both combatants landing some crippling body rips throughout the contest.

In the final round both boxers went for broke to the delight of the raucous crowd. When the dust settled, scores of 100-98, 99-91 and 98-92 were announced.

Speaking in the ring after the fight, Lovett responded to Les Sherrington who issued a challenge after his first round blowout of Plaisakda Singwancha.

“I’ve just fought ten and you went one. Pull the gloves back on and we can do it now,” he said.

If the Lovett-Sherrington fight does come off, it will be a terrific domestic matchup between two popular, hard-punching pressure fighters. But with negotiations falling through on numerous occasions in the past, I wouldn’t be holding my breath.

On the undercard junior welterweight Lance Gostelow, 16-1 (13), made short work of Sataporn Singwancha, 17-6-1 (10), stopping him at 2:09 of the second round. The bout was scheduled for eight.

Super middleweight Les Sherrington, 20-5 (13), destroyed Plaisakda Singwancha, 39-16 (29), in the first round of a scheduled six at the time of 1:58.

Despite giving away four pounds, Frank LoPorto, 9-3-2 (5), did what he was supposed to by stopping Hendrik Aritonang, 2-13 (1), at 2:18 in the second of a scheduled six.

Fighting just above the welterweight limit, Pat Rullo, 6-0 (1), and Adrian Campbell, 6-6 (3), delivered one of the best fights of the night. Fighting for the first time in two years, Campbell showed little signs of ring rust as he gave back as good as he got. In the end it was Rullo’s higher punch output that prevailed, with judges scoring the bout 59-55 and 58-56 twice, all in his favour.

Welterweight Samuel Colomban, 10-2 (4), boxed beautifully to control Jonathan Simamora, 5-6 (1), throughout five rounds until referee John McCubbin decided he had seen enough at 0:25.

In the four round opener light heavyweight Travis Staron, 3-0 (2), defeated Matthew Kapetanios, 1-2-1 (1), by second round stoppage at 2:57.

The card was promoted by Brian Amatruda and former IBF junior lightweight champion Barry Michael.
