Roy Jones Jr - To be or Not To Be Hungry: That is the Question
By Johnny Benz (July 7, 2006)
On July 29th Roy Jones Jr. return to the ring when he faces Prince Ajamu Badi. Much has been written on Roy Jones Jr's performance in his last few fights. Losing twice to Antonio Tarver and suffering a knock out loss to Glen Johnson, the Jones we've seen lately is anything but the Pound for Pound King we are use to seeing. So when Jones Jr. takes on Prince Ajamu later this month, many questions could be answered.

Perhaps the biggest question of all will be if Jones Jr still has it in him? He is a millionaire many times over and has proved his worth time and time again. Finding the hunger to continue might be his toughest foe.

If Jones Jr. loses to Prince Ajamu, Jones Jr has told the media he would have one more fight for his hometown crowd of
Pensacola, Florida, then retire. Even thinking of retirement might be an indication the Jones Jr's hunger is no longer there... but then again one could come to the conclusion that for Jones Jr. to even be fighting tells you there is a good chance the hunger is still there.

Many critics and fans alike are not convinced that Jones Jr's tank is empty. They hold on to the thought that Jones Jr. will pull out from his slump and find his mojo again. There is good reason for thinking and hoping that way.... after all Jones Jr. is no ordinary fighter. The skills he has shown us over the years rank amongst any great fighter of the past. He is so good that fans have accustom themselves to seeing nothing but picture perfect performances each time he laced up the gloves. So it is no wonder that many are still in shock over the way Jones Jr's career has played out over his recent fights.

It's not a question if Jones Jr is still good enough... the question is and remains, is he hungry enough? Is he hungry enough to work himself back to the level he is accustom too? The level fans admire him for and fighters fear him for. Can he reach deep down inside and bring back his fire?

July 29th could be the road back to redemption or ultimately the door way to retirement for Jones Jr. And that's a good enough reason to tune in and watch Jones Jr vs Prince Ajamu. Hopefully that hunger roars back to life.
