Oscar De La Hoya vs Floyd Mayweather Jr; As The Night Approaches
By Vikram Birring (May 2, 2007) Doghouse Boxing
One year ago, a trash talking Nicaraguan named Ricardo Mayorga spewed verbal venom mercilessly towards Oscar De La Hoya. Insulting him, his race, his wife, and anything else he could think of, Mayorga wrote a check his mouth could not cash, and he was promptly knocked out in six rounds.

One year later, in a different language but with the same provocation, Floyd Mayweather Jr. is insulting Oscar De La Hoya at every possible moment. His insults are not quite as vicious as the Nicaraguan wildman’s, but they
pack a far heavier punch. Mayorga was coming off a brutal beating at the hands of Felix Trinidad; Mayweather has never lost. In fact, it’s difficult to think of the last time he even lost a round.

Mayweather has almost every advantage in this fight: Speed, defense, ring generalship, and even the ability to converse with Jim Lampley between punches. De La Hoya has size and experience, but with his fights occurring as often as a new season of The Sopranos, it’s difficult to imagine De La Hoya being as sharp as Mayweather, no matter how many months he’s been in training camp.

De La Hoya hired a new trainer in Freddie Roach, but in truth, in his first camp with a new trainer, how much can Roach get out of his superstar pupil? In essence, De La Hoya could prepare for ten years and it would still not be enough, not against this fighter, the closest thing to perfection boxing has ever seen.

Against the pound for pound best fighter on the planet, unless Oscar De La Hoya poisons Floyd Mayweather before the fight, he will be in line for a legendary thrashing at the hands of the ‘Pretty Boy’.
