It has been reported by the London Telegraph that Joe Calzaghe vs Roy Jones Jr. will take place September 20th at Madison Square Garden in New York. Calzaghe, the world Light-Heavyweight champion has fought the majority his career in the UK and wanted his fight with Jones to take place in Wales. Despite Calzaghe's wishes to have th fight in the UK, HBO was determined to have the fight take place in the US.
Jones is coming off one of his most impressive performances in years when he outpointed Felix Trinidad at Madison Square Garden in January. Despite having never been defeated in his 15-year pro career, Calzaghe, 45-0, 32 KO's, will be facing arguably his most dangerous opponent ever in Roy Jones Jr, 52-4, 38 KO's. With the fight taking place in the states it also should provide a level playing field for the 39-year old American Jones Jr. The boxing betting odds for Joe Calzaghe vs Roy Jones Jr. have not yet been released but I would be surprised if Calzaghe is any more than a 2-1 favorite.
Jones is physically stronger and still has slightly quicker hands than Calzaghe who is usually faster than his foes. Another key factor will be Jones's best punch the left hook which is very effective against southpaws. Calzaghe captured the Light-Heavyweight title against Bernard Hopkins in his last fight but he really wasn't very impressive. Despite Jones's advantages in size and power, his suspect chin still makes him vulnerable. Calzaghe on the other hand has always displayed a solid set of whiskers and has enough pop to put Jones on the canvas.
