Rising Jr. welterweight star Devon Alexander was lucky to earn a unanimous decision over Ukrainian Andriy Kotelnik on HBO’s Boxing After Dark. The I.B.F and W.B.C belt holder Alexander, 21-0, 13 KO’s, was looking to put on a show in front his St. Louis hometown faithful but was given all he could handle from the Ukrainian contender Kotelnik, 31-4-1, 13 KO’s. Loads of money came in on Alexander who’s boxing betting price tag doubled from -900 to -1800 by fight time. Final scores read 116-112 on all three cards for Alexander.

The savvy veteran Kotelnik applied constant pressure all night and landed the cleaner punches in every round. Alexander circled and threw non-stop combination's but the majority of his light punches were caught on the gloves by Kotelnik’s high guard. At the end of the 3rd frame Alexander’s situation became increasingly difficult with a cut over his right eye. To Alexander's credit he did some decent body work but Kotelnik’s accurate and well-timed punches to the head clearly should have tipped the fight in his favor.

Alexander called out W.B.O champion Timothy Bradley after his controversial win but he really should be careful for what he wishes for. I would favor Bradley by a small margin to beat the overhyped Alexander. Devon is a light-puncher that has holes in his defense and Bradley’s better all-around skills would serve him well in a clash of young undefeated champions.
