I recently had the good fortune to catch up with former IBF world super featherweight champion and now prominent Australian boxing promoter, Barry Michael (interview embedded on this page in the video player), to talk about his April 28th fight card in Melbourne, Australia in conjunction with business partner, Brian Amatruda. Michael says this card features 10 undercard bouts that are guaranteed to be action packed.

“The card will feature future hall of famer and 3 division world champion James Toney against Australia’s Lucas Browne for the WBF World Heavyweight title. Also featuring is Kevin Johnson who will take on big punching Solomon Haumono in a heavyweight bout. Also in the heavyweight division will be Melbourne-based Franklin Egobi vs Kiwi-based American Clarence Tillman. Local rising star Jake Carr takes another step up in facing the very tough Joel Bourke, as well as exciting brothers Qamil and Ibrahim Balla, Matthew Lytwynenko, and Kane Watts making a challenge for Daniel Amman’s Australian Cruiserweight title.”

When quizzed about how negotiations fared getting Toney to Australia, Michael had this to say, “Brian (Amatruda) has done most of the negotiating to be honest, it all went pretty smoothly, James has been very keen to fight in the States, and nobody wants to fight him at the moment. We have got him out here to fight Lucas Browne, and Lucas should be congratulated for stepping up to take the fight”.

Michael also made it known that Toney has still a bit left in the tank having won 4 of his last 5 bouts, the only loss coming to Russia’s Denis Lebedev for the interim WBA Cruiserweight title in Moscow 2 years ago. Also worth noting was Toney’s weight cut for that fight.

Michael says “although James looked sluggish in his fight with Lebedev, he lost a massive 48 pounds for that fight. A weight cut that is generally of the tallest order for any fighter no matter how good they are, it’s too much.”

Fight fans in Australia really ought to support this event, not only to get behind the rising stars of this country, but to take the chance at seeing one of the best fighters of the modern era up close and personal.
