Miguel Cotto in the spotlight
By Anthony George AKA Zute, Doghouse Boxing (June 6, 2015)

Miguel Cotto
Miguel Cotto has been a professional pugilist since 2001. Cotto destroyed Jason Doucet in one round in his professional debut in Austin, Texas. Since that time the Puerto Rican slugger has been one of the most watched, yet scrutinized boxers in the world.

Cotto has had his ups and down inside the squared circle. However, you would be hard pressed to find another active fighter who has been predicted to lose more often than Cotto during the pre-fight stage.

Floyd Mayweather was going to make Cotto look silly and stop him late. Sergio Martinez, why bother even showing up?

Cotto has even been given losses in fights that have not even materialized yet. Canelo? Not much of a chance. Peter Quillin? Bad match up. GGG? Is that a joke? It is an odd dynamic for a fighter who has won 91 percent of his fights, with a knockout percentage of 82 percent, to garner such little respect before his fights, and also in fantasy match ups; boxing pundits chuckle if Cotto’s name is mentioned in the same breath with All Time greats of the weight classes he has competed in. Yet, Miguel Cotto is one of the most popular boxers of the last 25 years.

Odd.

It is not really a great use of anyone’s time to try and figure out this odd dynamic. Cotto has not let it bother him in any way. The 34-year-old just keeps fighting and winning. When Miguel Cotto steps in the ring Saturday night at the Barclays Center, in Brooklyn, NY., he finds himself in a unique position as of late-he is expected to win.

Daniel Geale draws the assignment opposite Cotto on Saturday. He is an accomplished boxer from Australia and has been battle tested. So why is he given very little chance to best Cotto? Perhaps it is more wishful thinking than reality. A Cotto win opens the doors for a mega fought with the aforementioned Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez.

Analyzing Cotto’s career, those hoping for a big Cotto bash better come with caution. The last time Cotto was considered to have an easy night he probably had the worst performance of his career, against Austin Trout; not very far from Brooklyn either, at Madison Square Garden. Can Geale be the spoiler the way the slick southpaw was? It is an intriguing enough question for every boxing fan to tune in Saturday night.
