Boxing
returned to Hollywood Park on Saturday night as top-rated Alejandro Perez and former
two-division world titleholder Takahiro Ao scored stoppage wins on the Top
Rank/Bash Promotions/Art of Boxing Promotions fight card, televised through UniMas.
The “Solo
Boxeo” main event featured Michoacán, Mexico's Alejandro “Alacran” Perez,
18-3-1 (12), went seven rounds with a tough Edgar “Basura” Riovalle, 35-15-2
(25), putting him away with a devastating body shot which left Riovalle wincing
in pain in the canvas.
Bobbing
and weaving, as is Perez's style, allowed him to come up with hooking shots,
scoring early to the body and head as Riovalle was a step behind in pulling the
trigger at all times.
An
accidental headbutt in the fourth round opened up a cut above Perez’s right
eye.
Riovalle
took everything in stride, coming forward or standing his ground, until a well-placed
liver shot put him down in a delayed reaction in the seventh frame. A grimacing
Riovalle failed to beat the 10-count as referee Lou Moret declared Perez the
victor at 1:14 of the round.
Former
WBC featherweight and super featherweight champion Takahiro Ao, 24-3-1 (11),
dropped the usually very durable Hardy Paredes with a right hand as Hardy came
in wide early in the second round of the co-featured bout. Moments later, Ao
finished the job by catching Paredes flush with a counter left which sent the
Chilean fight crashing back unto his back, for the stoppage at 2:51 of the
stanza.
With
the loss, Paredes saw his record fall to 16-12 (10).
Riverside’s
Saul Rodriguez, 10-0-1 (7), remained undefeated by outfoxing and making an
awkward and tough Dominic Coca, 8-4 (2), quit after three rounds of a scheduled
six.
Rodriguez
used his better technique, jabs and power to set up a barrage of sharp shots at
the end of the third round, leaving Coca doing a discombobulated dance to his
corner. Referee Jerry Cantu called the fight off before the fourth round as
Coca was in no shape to continue.
Light
heavyweight Trevor McCumby, 12-0 (10), beat up on Reynaldo Rodriguez, 6-7-1 (3),
for 29 seconds against the ropes as Rodriguez sat on the ropes, putting up zero
offense, leaving referee Wayne Hedgepeth no choice but to halt the battering. McCumby
walked back to his corner, disgusted with the non-effort put up by his foe.
Featherweight
Pedro Duran, 2-0 (2), wiped out Anthony Briones, 0-3, with a right hand in the
first round.
Ukrainian
cruiserweight Vyacheslav Shabranskyy, 4-0 (3), landed everything but the
kitchen sink against a very tough Daquan Morgan, 3-2-1 (3), through their
scheduled six rounds.
Shabranskyy
landed plenty of slapping head and body shots to easily put rounds in the bank.
Morgan
got his best round in the fifth as he caught Shabranskyy with head shots that
made him stagger briefly.
Scores
were 60-54 (twice) and 59-55.
In the evening's opener, Cuban heavyweight southpaw Yuniel Norticos, 15-0 (15),
got his distance and landed hard body shots en route to a stopping Keith Barr,
10-4 (3), at 1:19 of the second frame of a scheduled eight.
