Los Mochis, Sinaloa lightweight prospect Daniel “Canerito” Ruiz, 27-4-1 (19), won a ten-round bout against Mexico, City's Mario “Pocho” Perez, 6-4-1 (4), in Saturday night’s TV Azteca main event at the newly-built Arena Union in Los Mochis, Sinaloa, Mexico.

Both fighters spent most of the first round studying each other, finally letting hard head shots fly as the round came to an end.

What was a nondescript second round was salvaged by Ruiz, who violently shook Perez with a right hand. Perez’s mouthpiece shot out and the referee took time to replace the guard.

The crowd came alive once again in the third when Ruiz clocked his opponent with a left hook during a heated exchange, dropping Perez down on the seat of his pants.

Perez adjusted and worked on the counter over the next couple of rounds. Ruiz showed many flaws in his game such as cutting off the ring, following too much and walking in with a low guard.

Ruiz did better at the end of the sixth and was finally able to close the gap enough to land several unanswered shots, which had the referee keeping a close eye on the action.

Perez rallied back late in the seventh after being controlled by the favored Ruiz’s sporadic attacks.

Ruiz began showing signs of fatigue in the ninth and tenth, allowing Perez to land from the distance. Neither fighter landed anything defining until Perez chose to stand and throw punches. Ruiz let his hands go to land a few shots as Perez blocked many of them.

A unanimous decision win was simply announced for Ruiz in the end.

Kevin Aguilar Blasts Out Cristian Rodriguez in One…

Southpaw featherweight Kevin Aguilar, 4-0 (2), caught Cristian Rodriguez, 13-22 (9), with sneaky left hand shots, ultimately catching his opponent on the mug, putting him down against the ropes.

Seeing the fighter was in no shape to continue, the referee called off the fight at 2:01.

Frias Stops Lopez in Five…

Guadalajara flyweight Sergio “Finito” Frias, 12-1 (7), used calculated, long-range shots to pick apart Huatabampo, Sonora’s Reyes Lopez, 1-9, going on to score a KO stoppage in the fifth round of a scheduled six.

Lopez was game, throwing wide shots late in the first round and managed to land a left. The shot caught the well-schooled Frias’ attention after landing a few shots of his own upstairs.

Both fighters seemed intent in headhunting before Lopez finally went to the body. Frias landed some “45’s” (half hooks/half uppercuts) which momentarily stunned Lopez in the second round.

Frias kept landing uppercuts on the counter as Lopez pressed hard in the third. Looking to take away his foe’s legs with body shots, Frias allowed his opponent to dictate the pace by letting him stay on the inside. As a result, Lopez was unable to let his long arms go effectively in the frame.

Lopez stayed on track by going to the body with Frias landing the best (albeit few) shots in the fourth.

Frias got some distance in the fifth, landing uppercuts and right hands, busting up Lopez's face. Lopez began wilting under the heavy leather coming his way, finally taking the ten-count as the punishment finally took its toll.

Time of the stoppage was 2:06 of the round (To nickname yourself “Finito”- as in the legendary Ricardo “Finito” Lopez- is a very tall order. Although Frias showed very nice uppercuts, in no way, shape or form is he anywhere in Lopez’s class).

Arroyo Drops Valdez Three Times, Gets the Stoppage in Two…

Super lightweight Guillermo Arroyo, 5-1-1 (4), overpowered a tough Carlos “Charly” Valdez, 15-13-1 (9), dropping him twice in the first. Valdez was lucky enough to escape the round as the bell came to the rescue.

The fight was stopped at 39 seconds into the second frame, as Arroyo's firepower was just too much for Valdez, who hit the canvas again during an exchange.
