The old “Baby-Faced Assassin” showed up at the Coliseo Olimpico at the Universidad de Guadalajara in Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico, where he took out Jose Arias in two in the Fox Deportes- televised “Top Rank Live” main event on Saturday night.

Arias, 15-2 (9), played right into Barrera’s hands in the first round, coming in aggressively. Arias was caught with nice counter shots, dropping to the canvas early in the first frame.

Warming up to the task and with an expected title shot in the super lightweight division this year hanging in the balance, Barrera (who looked a bit slow and too methodical in his last outing, a decision win over Adailton DeJesus) did not take it slow and easy. Instead, the Mexico City fighter ended matters in the second frame, nailing his foe and flooring him once more.

Referee Jesus Salcedo had seen enough and halted matters at 2:29 into the round. With the win, Barrera, who turned 37 years young three weeks ago, moved his record to 67-7 with 44 KOs.

In other results, former NABO lightweight titleholder and super featherweight contender, Martin “El Brochas” Honorio, 29-5-1 (15), dropped Adrian Tellez, 11-7-1 (8), in the third round, with a stoppage win coming moments later after a furious attack prompted the fight to be called off by Salcedo at 1:22.

In what ended up being an upset, super flyweight Jonathan Ramos, 7-8-2 (3), defeated the favored David Gaspar, 16-3-1 (9), by eight-round unanimous decision.

Scores were 78-74, 79-73 and 77-75.
