“No Fear” Smith, 26-22-7 (4), of Philadelphia returns to the state of
FL Friday night to challenge Cuban Umberto Savigne, 9-1 (7), now out of
Miami for his WBA Fedelatin light heavyweight title he won in May over
Richard Hall in a knock down drag down battle! The fight will be at the
BB&t Center in Sunrise, FL.
Just
shy of 2 years ago Smith came to St. Petersburg, FL, and upset former
IBF/IBO super middleweight champion Jeff “Left Hook” Lacy, over 10
rounds. Lacy has yet to fight again since. In Smith’s last fight he
won the PA light heavyweight title over Tony “Boom Boom” Ferrante in
May.
The
33-year old Savigne had 3 fights as a cruiserweight before losing his
only fight and dropping down to the light heavyweight division. He has
scored knockouts in 5 of his last 6 fights except to Quinton Rankin whom
Smith also decisioned 3 weeks later in January of this year.
The
30-year old Smith who trains at the James Shuler Gym, in West
Philadelphia is managed by gym owner Buster Custus. Sharing the
training are former IBF light middleweight champion Rob “Bam Bam” Hines
and Marty Shuler for whom his brother James Shuler the gym was dedicated
to. Smith helped prepare Yusaf “Mack Attack” Mack for his losing
effort last weekend in the UK in an attempt to defeat Carl Froch for his
IBF super middleweight title. Smith has also been sparring with former
NBA champion Prince Badi Ajamu.
“The
winner of this fight is promised a ranking in the WBA. Savigne has had
490 amateur fights. I saw his last fight with Hall and took the fight
when they offered it,” said Smith. The card promoted by Henry Rivalta’s
Acquinity Sports and will feature 6 bouts at 10 rounds headlined by
former world WBO super bantam, super featherweight and IBF lightweight
champion the unbeaten Joan Guzman who meets Russia’s Khabib
Allakhverdiev for the vacant WBA and IBO light welterweight title.
Johnny Bos will serve as matchmaker.
