Clear Skies, No (Tavoris) Cloud

I read with some bemusement the news that Bernard Hopkins had been signed to a three-fight deal by HBO, as he embarks on his rematch against WBC lt. heavyweight titlist, Jean Pascal on May 21st. Huh? Wasn’t Hopkins the guy that the network had supposedly disavowed and basically thrown off their airwaves. Now, at age 46, he gets a multi-fight deal?

I’m not saying that HBO shouldn’t televise Hopkins, my question is, do they really need to make a long-term commitment to a guy who fights basically once or twice a year, at most, and is closer to the age of 50 than 40?

Meanwhile, a young guy like IBF lt. heavyweight titlist, Tavoris Cloud, languishes. And from what I hear, HBO doesn’t have any real solid plans to put him on anytime soon. Cloud, at the very least, is a young guy who brings flesh blood and excitement to this division, isn’t it time for HBO to start looking ahead and not repeating the same mistakes of the past?

This is certainly a head-scratching to move to those in the boxing industry.

- Meanwhile, I was informed that Paul Williams will return to HBO on April 30th against an opponent to be determined. Again, they are buying a fighter (one that was KO’d in two rounds in his last outing) instead of a fight.

The more things change, the more things stay the same.
