Gamboa No-Show

Yuriorkis Gamboa
Yesterday in Miami, Florida, was supposed to be the opening press conference for the April 14th bout between Brandon Rios and Yuriorkis Gamboa. Only problem is that Gamboa, who requested a press event be held in South Florida, didn’t show, stiffing the assembled media and the Mayor of the city.

Word is that not only does Gamboa have cold feet over the fight, but that associates of one Floyd Mayweather, namely Tommy Smalls, have been whispering in his ear for a few weeks. Rumors were that he was in Las Vegas with Mayweather and his crew - something which seems to be confirmed on David Levi’s twitter account (who works for Mayweather) who tweeted a picture of Gamboa at Mayweather's gym on Monday:

Geez, there goes Mayweather, keeping another highly anticipated fight from taking place

But on a serious note, Top Rank believes that they have proof of Gamboa committing to the fight and a firm promotional pact with the Cuban defector.

Now, the question is, if he runs out on this fight, what tact will HBO (who was making a big push for this event) take with Gamboa? It says here, that they need to be as punitive as possible. The bottom line is that unless you take strong action, you’re just inviting more tomfoolery like this in the future.
