D-Day for Darchinyan-Donaire
By Steve Kim, MaxBoxing (April 29, 2010) Special to Doghouse Boxing
As of right now, there is no deal that has been finalized for the rematch between super flyweight king, Vic Darchinyan and his long conqueror, Nonito Donaire for August 21st on Showtime. There is one final hurdle- but it’s a big one. Both Gary Shaw (who reps Darchinyan) and Top Rank (which has Donaire) are coming to the table with their own international TV deals. And unless a division of that money is agreed to, this fight will not take place.

Here’s the bottom line, Showtime wants this bout finalized this week, if not, they will move on- with a Darchinyan fight and Donaire will be back on Pinoy Purgatory, uh, I mean Pinoy Power, most likely. And the venue for that rematch, the Home Depot Center in Carson, California, has told Shaw that they have reserved their venue for Darchinyan.

But let’s hope a deal is struck. This is the only fight that really matters at 115 pounds.

- And is it just me, or is the bout between Hozumi Hasagawa and Fernando Montiel getting completely overlooked. I know it’s the weekend of Mayweather-Mosley, but this is arguably a fight between two top 15 pound for pound performers. But perhaps this has a lot to do with this fight taking place in Japan.
