Dan Rafael of ESPN.com was the
first to report that after giving a thumbs-up to Nobu Ishida as Paul Williams'
foe on July 9th, HBO rescinded its original decision. I've been told
that this kibosh didn't just come from the heads of HBO Sports, Ross Greenburg and Kery
Davis, but from the higher-ups above them.
OK, moving forward, Williams needs an opponent for July 9th- a night where rival Showtime has a very good looking
main event of Brandon Rios-Urbano Antillon. What I would do is insist he faces Sergiy
Dzinziruk, just like the network did with Sergio Martinez back in March. In
this case, you are killing two birds with one stone. Not only is it a
representative fight but since you already have a commitment to bring back
Dzinziruk (who people may still not know how to pronounce), you might as well
tab him.
On the other hand, the Williams camp can accept or
reject anyone they choose. However, HBO has an obligation to its subscribers
(who are still kinda important, last I checked) to uphold a certain standard in
its programming. This here represents a positive step in that direction.
