Nonito Donaire
Rumors are swirling that there may be an amicable resolution for the return of bantamweight kingpin Nonito Donaire, who in recent months, has been bogged down in litigation, as he tried severing his ties with Top Rank to join Golden Boy Promotions. Word is that the “Filipino Flash” will resume his career in November with Top Rank promoting his fights.

"In my mind, he never left Top Rank, he's one of our favorite fighters," said Top Rank matchmaker Bruce Trampler. "I think he's, pound-for-pound, one of the top five fighters in the world and we can't wait for him to resume his career with Top Rank."

The last we saw of Donaire, he scored a spectacular second-round knockout of Fernando Montiel on February 19th at the Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas to capture the WBC and WBO 118-pound titles. He seemed to have all the momentum in the world and a date was set aside on May 28th for him to appear once again on HBO but harsh words were exchanged between the fighter’s camp (including his wife, Rachel) and Bob Arum. Yes, it seemed to get a tad personal, this dispute.

But that now seems to be water under the bridge, as far as Trampler is concerned.

"Absolutely, it was a bump in the road in Nonito's career; he had a lot of momentum going and we're looking forward to getting him back in the limelight, getting back on the premium networks and letting the world see what a great fighter Nonito is," he said from his offices in Las Vegas.

The focus now, at least from Top Rank's perspective, is to just move forward.

"I don't get involved in the politics," said Trampler, "I'm just interested in the career inside the ring and, of course, I wish him the best outside the ring but I just think that he's a rare gem and needs to be on the air. I think fight fans are clamoring to see him and me, personally, I can't wait to see him back in the ring."
