Golden Boxing Notes from DC

Had a chance to talk to Golden Boy CEO, Richard Schaefer for a few minutes earlier. Schaefer is in Washington DC where his company is staging the soon-to-be-sold-out bout between Amir Khan and Lamont Peterson at the Convention Center. Here’s a few nuggets he told me...

- He says all four fighters are on board for Jan. 28th in Houston at the Reliant Arena, when jr middleweight James Kirkland faces Carlos Molina and Erik Morales defends his WBC jr. welterweight title against Danny Garcia. This card will be televised by HBO.

- When I asked who would be the opening bout on the Feb. 11th Showtime telecast (when Andre Berto and Victor Ortiz rematch at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas), he said that talented featherweight Gary Russell Jr. could get that opening slot on the telecast. It’ll be interesting to see who is matched with Russell, who in many respects is almost too good for his own good.

- Feb, 25th will the date when new welterweights Marcos Maidana and Devon Alexander square off in St. Louis. WBO jr. lightweight titlist Adrien Broner will most likely face Eloy Perez in the HBO opener.( It says here that his is by far Broner’s toughest test to date). Say what you want about any regional biases that might( or do) exist for Alexander but the reality is, this is the only place where this fight will really draw.

- Moving forward, Schaefer says that his company will focus on more locally themed fights- like the one taking place this Saturday- that make sense based on the boxers involved. Just my opinion, but I expect their shows in Texas and ’the Loo’ to do very well at the box-office. Let’s hope this is a trend that continues.

Schaefer also says that their Telefutura series will be back in 2012, in addition to some other television deals that they will be announcing in the near future.
