GB Champion Arrowsmith tops Northampton Card

Kings Heath boxer Reuben Arrowsmith put in another scintillating
performance at Cripps Recreational Centre, Northampton on Saturday
night, drawing to a close a stellar season that saw the rising star
capture Tri-Nations honours in Cardiff in July.
The charismatic youngster, coached by Arthur Daly, was given a stiff
test in the under 62kg class by fleet-footed Louis Claridge from St
Paul's Gym, Hull. Boasting an impressive background himself, the
Yorkshire boxer had battled to the quarter finals of the national
championships earlier this year and showed no sign of underdog status as
he surged forward from the opening bell. The talented visitor set a
frenetic pace, working well on the inside and digging in with effective
shots which Arrowsmith looked to neutralise with long rights to the
head.
A crunching uppercut to the body of Claridge midway through the second
might have offset the visitor's momentum, but the tough Yorkshire
fighter rallied back. Ultimately Claridge's come-forward tactics were
his undoing, playing into the hands of counter-punch specialist
Arrowsmith, who was able to pick his shots cleanly, maintaining
consistent accuracy. Employing a measured, businesslike strategy, the
King's Heath local showed off every one of the skills which had led him
to championship honours, scoring a unanimous decision and contributing
yet another win for the local club on the night.
'I just stuck to what Arthur told me,' Arrowsmith said of the win. 'I
didn't know much about the guy but the first round, he came out quite
strong. I stayed behind my jab, kept my range, then let my shots go -
and he just kept walking onto them. I want to thank Arthur for putting
the show on, James, Mark and all the other trainers - we've got a great
club.'
Coach Arthur Daly added, 'I could see some of Reuben's shots were
hurting, when he landed to the body, you could see him grimace. I'd
maybe like to have seen him keep his guard up a bit more, but he knew
what he was doing.'
