I traveled to a famous gym outside of Boston, Massachusetts to interview a fighter that really impressed me in one of the local amateur boxing shows at a nearby armory. We agreed to meet for a informal get together. I arrived in front of the gym in a old busy industrial complex. Walking into this majestic center, I came upon the young man. A man of inspiration and high integrity despite his condition of cerebral palsy; (a disorder that affects a person's ability to move and to maintain balance and posture).
The young man starts off by saying: I started boxing with a trainer that won the Golden Gloves in 2007..You know: "Everybody laughed when I mentioned I wanted to start boxing."
But to quickly point out, "they aren't laughing now." My friends are amazed at my improvements, as I progress into the sport. My trainers at the clubs are awesome and they push me to the limit. We train hard, working on movements to get a lot faster and it has really improved my performance.
"I started getting involved into boxing," the young man says, "about 6 years ago." I'm going to continue amateur boxing as long as I can.
I tried other sports, but boxing tops them all. I love
boxing now, its in my blood, and being very competitve, win or lose, you are still a winner. To tell you the truth: "I started with 'MMA' and the doctor told me to take on another sport. He was mostly concerned about my well-being." So then when I decided to do boxing, my parents became hestitant as with the MMA.
I have good friends that I spar with every Saturday morning. Also, I train at another boxing gym in Quincy. The owner is a very nice guy who has dedicated his life to the sport of boxing. He was trained by boxing legends in the well known gyms in New York, and as a professional fighter was ranked #2 in the country and finished with a record of 18-3. So, I'm very lucky to have these people as my
mentors.
So, how often do you plan fighting this year, I remarked: "Well, I hope to fight every 3 months or so. I have to keep in shape and want to always be an inspiration for the kids."
On my final questions to the young man, I stated: "How would you sum up your boxing career?"... He chuckles, "Hopefully with one professional bout to my name and my accomplishments and my dreams in life will be fulfilled.
I smiled with a tear in my eye and waved with a goodbye statement, I say: "Have we seen the best of "The Dynamite Kid." With a big beaming grin, he responds, "LET'S WAIT AND SEE!" Amazed with that response, all I have to say is: "How powerful is a moment of that magnitude."
