Philadelphia’s Joey Eye has been a long time fixture around the boxing gyms and rings from Philly to Atlantic City, NJ, for many years.  On Monday April 16th by the invitation of Doghouse Boxing's very own Dave Ruff who runs a program for the boys and girls at Fraims in Wilmington, DE, the famous boxing “cut-man, promoter, and actor” dazzled the kids.

Joey is vey animated and showed the kids how he works on cuts and talked about the kids staying in school and doing the right things.   He talked about his appearance in 3 of the 6 “Rocky” movies.  He also invited some of the faculty to his promotion at Harrah’s in Chester, PA, on May 4th.  On top is Tony “TNT” Ferrante and Dhafir “No Fear” Smith.  Also scheduled is the former Kensington boxer now living in the Wilmington, DE, area where he trains under DE’s Dave Tiberi, Dennis Hasson.  It would be his return to boxing in PA.  He is now 13-0 (5) with 2 knockouts since moving to DE having fought in Atlantic City in both bouts.

Bill Schmid an avid boxing fan and free lance photographer was snapping pictures while Michael Lumpkin was filming the entire event.  Ruff had Rachel Morales, Miss Q and Candice Estrada from the club involved.  Some of the kids were James Glick, Leon Price (who was awarded a trophy by Ruff), Kim Manlove, Donovan Morales and Jasmine Glick.  Also Travis Richardson, a former boxer of Ruff’s was there along with Travis, Jr.

Ruff has received such boxing people as former WBA bantamweight champion Jeff Chandler, now a resident of Newark, DE, referees Steve Smoger and Benji Esteves, Jr., Wilmington unbeaten heavyweight Amir Mansour, unbeaten NJ boxer Derrick “Take It To the Bank” Webster and former world heavyweight champion “Smokin” Joe Frazier and his business manager Les Wolff who is now in the process of doing a book on the late Frazier.  Ruff awarded Joey Eye a trophy of appreciation.

Joey Eye talked about growing up in South Philadelphia where you had to be in a gang to survive.  How a friend of his got him to go to a boxing gym to learn how to fight.  He can be seen at major TV fights with the giant eye on the back of his jacket.  It’s great when people like him take the time not only to come down to talk to the kids but come from another state (PA) to do it.  Helping kids has no boundaries!
