Hot Night at the Blue Horizon

It’s been 17 years since this writer has been to the Blue Horizon in Philadelphia. In a sweltering heat in the main event scheduled for six rounds, Philadelphia’s Farah Ennis, 13-0 (7), took only 0:56 to stop Steve Walker, 24-25 (16), of Hannibal, MO. Referee Vic DeWysocki had seen enough. For Walker it was his 21st time he was stopped and I think he should call it a day.

In the opening bout Darrell Jones, 3-0 (1), of Philly won a hard fought majority decision over Marcus Hall, 3-1 (2), of
Rochester, NY. This was a four round, junior middleweight bout. The referee was DeWysocki.

Keenan Smith, 1-0, of Philly, and a former national amateur champion, won a 4 round decision over Raphael Montes, 1-0, of Lawrence, Mass. This was a super featherweight bout. It was a close fight for the first two rounds before Smith overtook Montes the final two rounds to earn the decision. Gary Rosato was the referee.

Olivia Fonseca, 3-2-2 (2), of Philly, and Akima Stocks, 3-0 (3), of Newark, NJ, put on the best action of the night in a four round, junior middleweight bout. Stocks won by a majority decision. Dewysocki served as referee.

Van Oscar Penovaroff, 5-0 (4), from Hawaii and fighting out of upstate Reading had trouble with the boxing of Kywame Hill, 1-3 (1), of Philly. It was a good lightweight fight over four rounds with Penovaroff able to overcome Hill with continuous pressure to take the decision. Rosato was the referee.

Coy Evans, Philly, 8-0 (2), won a 6 round decision over Barbaro Zepeda, 9-21-2 (2), of Chicago, in a battle of featherweights. The action was going back and forth with Evans getting the better of the two. All three judges scored it 59-54. Rosato was the referee.

It was a good card put on by Sam Promotions. Don Elbaum was the matchmaker. They’re promoting their next card July 24th in Wilmington, DE, at Frawley Stadium.
