Carl Froch retained his WBA/IBF super middleweight titles with a hugely controversial 9th round stoppage over challenger George Groves.

Groves was in control for the first 8 rounds dropping the champion heavily in the 1st round with a rapier like right hand. He continued to press Froch back throughout the fight with a lightening quick jab and clean, hard straight right hands.

Froch looked in trouble a number of times during the fight and had little success but did press Groves back at times but mainly landed arm punches on the gloves of Groves.

In the 8th round Froch appeared to be desperate and managed to land some wild shots that helped stop the pressure from Groves. Going into the 9th round George appeared to be up by at least 7 rounds but after a few exchanges got caught with a right hand from Froch, pushing him back and somewhat outrageously prompting referee Howard Foster to stop the fight much to the surprise of Groves, his corner and the crowd.

Froch showed immense heart and courage in the fight, and Groves proved he belongs at world level. Hopefully a rematch will follow.

Scores at the time of stoppage 78-73, 76-75, 76-75.
