SecondsOut.com - Jerry Glick reporting: The WBA Lightweight title is vacant. No one retired; no one moved up in weight, but weight had everything to do with it. Even after he was given a chance to lose the extra pound and a half and remain champion, Brendan Rios could not get his body down to the lightweight limit for his second defense and suffered the indignity of losing the belt on the scales.

The way it works is that the Oxnard, CA resident, Rios fought at the higher weight, 136.6 pounds, against England’s John Murray, who came in under the limit at 134 ¾ pounds, with the title vacant and if Murray wins he’s the new champ, but if Rios wins the title remains vacant. The title is still unoccupied. Although Murray certainly had his moments, Rios slowly dismantled the British champ in eleven bloody rounds on the undercard of the Cotto-Margarito show promoted by Top Rank at Madison Square Garden.

Murray put up a typically brave fight but although Rios looked flat early on and didn’t hit his stride until the sixth round, he busted up Murray’s face and made it into a bloody mask. The Brit fought on taking hard shot that would have taken the fight out of most boxers, but not him.

A defensive minded Murray had some salt poured on his wounds when attempted to dig to the body only to stray low and lose a point in the seventh. They fought in close most of the time with Rios outworking Murray.

Finally with Murray absorbing a beating in the eleventh frame as Rios opened up with an unrelenting attack of uppercuts, and fast combinations that had the Brit staggering and covered in blood, referee Earl Brown did the right thing and saved Murray from further punishment. Time of the stoppage, 2:06.

Rios improved to 29-0-1 (21 KOs), while Murray saw his numbers tumble to 31-2 (18 KOs). With two losses in a row, it is hard to say where Murray can go from here. As for Rios, the junior-welterweights beckon.
