By SecondsOut.com on Doghouse Boxing. British super-middleweight George Groves may have successfully turned
back the challenge of tough Mexican Francisco Sierra at the HP Pavilion
on San Jose, California on Saturday night but he sustained a nasty cut
in the third round and looked worryingly vulnerable at times.
A head clash in the third round opened a cut around Groves’,15-0,
right eye and it did effect him but he eventually got the job done in
the sixth round when floored Sierra. A a cracking right hand stunned
the Mexican before a thumping left hook that followed finally sent him
crashing to the canvas. Sierra rose scrabbled to his feet at the count
of eight and was allowed to continue but a series of heavy right hands
forced the referee to step in and stop the contest.
Groves is scheduled to face bitter rival Kenny Anderson in a rematch
in September but the severity of the cut sustained in this latest battle
may just delay the rematch for a short spell.
