In ten days’ time, the Turning Stone Casino Resort in upstate New York will host an HBO “Boxing After Dark” card which has action and rough play written all over it. The city of Verona, N.Y. sits in the heart of the Oneida Nation and all is now set for a surefire night of excitement when undefeated middleweight Gennady Golovkin (23(20)-0) of Kazakhstan meets Grzegorg Proksa (28(21)-1) of Poland in the evening’s main event. The top ten rated Golovkin will make his debut on American soil. Equally entertaining should be the co-main event, which will showcase the talents of young Puerto Rican Jonathan Gonzalez and Serhiy Dzinziruk of the Ukraine in a light middleweight contest which is scheduled for ten rounds. Earlier this afternoon, the fighters and their respective trainers as well as the promoters involved (Arthur Pellulo of Banner Promotions, Tom Loeffler of K2 Promotions, Leon Margules of Warriors Boxing and Javier Bustillo of Universal Promotions) took part in a brief international conference call to discuss the upcoming bouts which are to take place on the first of September.

Mr. Pellulo was the initial speaker of the afternoon. He took a moment to stress his overall satisfaction with the events to come as well as the ability for various promotional companies to effectively see eye to eye.

“First off, I’d like to say thank you to Warriors Boxing and K2. This shows that promoters can cooperate with each other. We have a great opening bout , which is of course Gonzalez vs. Dzinziruk. I’m not sure that the fight will go for the full twelve rounds, but it should be great. I also know that American audiences have been waiting to see Gennady Golovkin. This will be a great evening for boxing and HBO.”

Shortly thereafter, Mr. Loeffler added his thoughts to the conversation. “We know that both fighters are big punchers and this will be a great middleweight fight. September will surely be a great month for boxing”, said the Managing Director of K2 Promotions.

The undefeated light middleweight prospect from the island nation of Puerto Rico, Jonathan Gonzalez informed all listening parties that he is fit and ready to go for September 1st. With the assistance of an interpreter, Gonzalez said, “I’m very thankful to the promoters and to HBO for their trust in me and for getting this very important fight in my career. I only have one plan and that’s to go and take the pain to my opponent. I’ll fight my same style regardless of what he (Dzinziruk) brings to the ring”.

His opponent, Serhiy Dzinziruk has been inactive since March 2011. In his last bout he suffered an eighth round knockout loss to Sergio Martinez at the Foxwoods Resort in Connecticutm.

The two competitors from the main event then took to the phone. Although their grasp of English was somewhat limited, they each were able to get their messages across to those on the line.

Gennady Golovkin was a fighter of few words when he was asked how he felt about the chance to finally fight in the United States and reach a nationwide audience on HBO.

“This is my first fight in America and I’ll be on HBO. I’m happy now.”

Golovkin is trained by Abel Sanchez in Big Bear Lake, California. Mr. Sanchez holds an impressive resume of preparing fighters in the past, such as Terry Norris, Carlos Baldomir, Samuel Peter and Yori Boy Campas. Even after so many great fighters had graced his gym, Abel knew that Gennady was a special talent.

“I’ve had the pleasure of working with a lot of great fighters, but this one is by far the best. I think the 300 plus amateur fights to his credit have helped make him such a serene fighter. He possesses power in each hand. He needed to understand what his plusses were. He used to sit back and wait to counterpunch. He understands that he needs to be the aggressor. He needs to make the fight in order make the public want to see him again.”

Grzegorz Proksa spoke of the respect he hold for his Kazakhstani opponent. Said Proksa, “It will be a tough fight. I respect my opponent, but I will be ready. He’s one of the toughest I have faced.”
